Paulette Mangold11/20/20018:44:25 PMGood
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:44:31 PMI'm anxious for t-giving break!
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:44:59 PMHow is my favorite class?
Paulette Mangold11/20/20018:45:02 PMMe too, I need the mental health break.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:45:17 PMI need to time to catch up.
Jennifer Nelson11/20/20018:45:34 PMhello
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20018:45:39 PMFine now that all the confusion has passed.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:45:50 PMHi Jenn
doug greenway11/20/20018:46:11 PMhello everyone
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:46:13 PMHey, I think I'm finally in!
Jennifer Nelson11/20/20018:46:13 PMHello amd I late arriving?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:46:25 PMOkay gang, onelogistical note before we get started . . .
Sandy Nightingale11/20/20018:46:41 PMHI!
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:46:41 PMNo Jenn, we had a start-up glitch
Paulette Mangold11/20/20018:46:41 PMyeah Lisa
cliff delong11/20/20018:47:08 PMWhen were we to have read the Hardware Audit and Software and Website Evaluation sections and their associated readings by?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:47:12 PMYou all will be taking at least lt 731, multimedia from USD, have you signed up?
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:47:38 PMnot yet
Cindy Rall11/20/20018:47:44 PMnot yet
Paulette Mangold11/20/20018:47:45 PMnot yet
Sandy Nightingale11/20/20018:47:53 PMNot yet
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20018:47:53 PMyes, will there be a site in the west for us folks or will we have to drive to USD?
Heidi Noem11/20/20018:48:10 PMI tried, got an error, haven't heard back from USD
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:48:15 PMOkay, get it done, contact Dawn Hamilton as DSU and register.
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:48:17 PMok Marcia what are you talking about
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:48:31 PMYou'll be registered and the course instructor, Ray Thompson will contect you.
Sandy Krage11/20/20018:48:36 PMwhere do we go to sign up?
doug greenway11/20/20018:48:44 PMMark, could you send the link out in a email please
Sandy Krage11/20/20018:48:59 PMok, see it above.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:48:59 PMI'm hoping that Ray can make it to you for the west river folks
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:49:13 PMWe're going to try to support him for that
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:49:33 PMIs there an on-line registration like there was last time?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:49:34 PMThere will be a few hands-on lab sessions for the class
Sandy Krage11/20/20018:50:04 PMSo it'll be partly on-line and partly in person?
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:50:11 PMYes there is and I think that I'm registered
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:50:11 PMNo Lisa, you will have to email dawn.hamilton@dsu.edu and have her register you, as a DIAL student for the lt 731 class.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:50:23 PMRight Sandy.
Bruce Long11/20/20018:50:34 PMAm I finally in?
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:50:38 PMOops thinking about another class, sorry
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:50:38 PMok, and I assume that's how we'd register for the other classes also?
Sandy Krage11/20/20018:50:43 PMhi, bruce
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:50:55 PMNow, you may also choose to take an elective next semester, go to the distance education web site and register there.
Bruce Long11/20/20018:51:00 PMHi. Nice to be here. About to give up.
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:51:11 PMok, thanks Mark.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:51:20 PMOnly use Dawn to register for the USD class, LT731--multimedia production
cliff delong11/20/20018:51:36 PMDid Dano or you come up with any online offerings?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:51:53 PMGlad you made it Bruce.
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20018:52:01 PMI sent the form back to Dawn signed. When will I get confirmation that its been received and that I will be in the class?
Bruce Long11/20/20018:52:30 PMSo Mark, I am wondering about the assignment you sent out today. Do you want us to powt our entire reaction on the web board at once or can we interact over pieces of the article?
Tricia Neugebauer11/20/20018:52:45 PMhi
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:52:57 PMtalked to Mike Hoadley at Vermillion Fri and saw Ray, but didn't talk to him.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:53:19 PMYes Cliff, there is CET 740 Systems theory in distributed (distance) education, and CET 769 Adult learning in distance education which we are planning to pipe over the DDN to a few interest folks in Mitchell and one person in Winner. Sign up for those classes at the Distance education web site.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:53:26 PMHi Tricia, thansk for being persistant
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:53:57 PMOkay, about your evaluation plans. . .
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:54:53 PMCliff asked when the final pieces are due. Well, you are to turn in the final version of the plan, on Dec. 6 or something like that, so you should have the readings covered by the end of the month
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:55:05 PMFirst, the hardware audit.
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:55:22 PMgood was wondering about that
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:55:31 PMOne of the basic assumptions we make when working in a technology environment is that the technology is sufficient for the learning goals.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:55:34 PMIt often is not.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:55:48 PMYour job is to plan into your evaluation a technology audit.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:56:14 PMThat is, a process for looking at the goals and seeing if the available technology can at all feasibly address those goals.
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:56:21 PMso the hardware audit is not an individual one, but with the team
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:56:24 PMThe readings give you some good guidance.
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20018:56:39 PMMark, is a technology audit the same as an inventory?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:56:52 PMThe hardware audit is a component of your evaluation plan
Bruce Long11/20/20018:56:56 PMIn the samples, it looks more like an inventory.
cliff delong11/20/20018:57:04 PMHow do you audit intangibles like attitude and willingness?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:57:17 PMYou should have a question in your key questions, you shouljd have a questions that deals specifically with that, a few of you do already.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:57:24 PMThose that don't will add one.
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20018:57:38 PMMark, may we base the audit on the CEO Forum star chart and use a rubric to evaluate the school district's technology use?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:57:40 PMAn inventory would be a good word Bruce
Rose Andersen11/20/20018:57:49 PMwouldn't the audit be how accessible the technology is and how is it being used? Also how many computers there per students?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:58:12 PMI don't think you can audit those kinds of things Cliff--so, we're jsut sticking with the technology
Bruce Long11/20/20018:58:43 PMSo do we need to establish some kind of benchmarks based onteh goals in order to do this?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:58:45 PMNo Rose, we simply want to know if there's sufficinet technology to meet hte learning goals.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:59:03 PMI gues you would, it will depend gretly on your environment.
Brian O'Connor11/20/20018:59:29 PMSo Marcia's plan to use the star chart is ggod?
Brian O'Connor11/20/20018:59:38 PM...good..
Bruce Long11/20/20018:59:51 PMYou should stutter when you say god.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20018:59:53 PMBut if a district says in a technology plan that it will deploy interactive video to bring external sources to student learners, and then doesn't have the dedicated ITV system, that's a problem you want to detect right away.
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:00:08 PMis there another chart that could be used with the star chart
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:00:21 PMA couple of folks are using the Star Chart as a diagnostic, sure, it's fine.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:01:19 PMBut, you should look at the learning goals of the organization your developing the evaluation plan for, and simple ask yourself what kind of tehcnology it will takle to meet these goals, and see if the inventory matches your needs list.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:01:31 PMWe'll consider you the expert in this process.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:01:53 PMSo it could be a simple process?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:02:15 PMThe audit shouldn't be more than a page or two, but it will include destops, peripherals, and other technologies
Bruce Long11/20/20019:02:21 PMDoes an audit include recommendations?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:02:29 PMVery simple, but essential, and a good place to start with the evaluation.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:02:56 PMNo Bruce, only to say that key peices of technology seem to be absent.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:03:15 PMA summary statement of the audit might say something like . . .
cliff delong11/20/20019:03:53 PMhello?
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:03:54 PMI need some clarification on this. Is this still with our team members or is it individual?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:03:56 PM"the audit reveals a student to computer ratio that is inconsistant with the access goals of the school.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:04:20 PMThis is part of you evaluation plan Rose, so your working with your team.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:04:44 PMCliff, we're still here, are you?
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:04:46 PMAm I jinixng the netmeeting? Everyone seems to be going off
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:04:57 PMDoes this notion of a technology audit make sense?
Bruce Long11/20/20019:05:01 PMIn order to be on track schedule wise, how soon should we have hardware audit done?
cliff delong11/20/20019:05:05 PMSeem to be a few people dropping out...
Cindy Rall11/20/20019:05:07 PMSo do we need to develop a plan for the audit or actually do it?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:05:34 PMIN the next few days Bruce,
Bruce Long11/20/20019:05:57 PMWhat happened to Thanksgiving vacation!?
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:06:11 PMIt's going to be hard to find times we can work together during Thanksgiving break
Brian O'Connor11/20/20019:06:14 PMI'm...fading...Rose...can't... Stay...Online...
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:06:16 PMNow, Bruce. Be Thankful!
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:06:19 PMWe're jsut in the planning stage Cindy, none of your evaluation plan will be executed until you have support and buyin from the admininstration, and you'll get that after your plan is complete--after the class
Brian O'Connor11/20/20019:06:38 PMWooHoo!
Cindy Rall11/20/20019:07:05 PMok sorry i was just confused as to whether we need a summary statement sorry
cliff delong11/20/20019:07:07 PMHypothetically, it would already be done and in the Technology Coordinator's office (Technology Inventory)
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:07:09 PMOkay, just make sure it's done by the time you tuen in your final plan. It will be one of the easier parts of the evaluation.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:07:40 PMI will be thankful for easy.
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:07:46 PMHow about the software audit?
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20019:07:47 PMSo Mark -- to see if I understand -- we look at the districts goals, look at their inventory to see if they have the hardware to accomplish the goals and point out what may be missing or needed to accomplish the goals?
cliff delong11/20/20019:07:47 PMSo how should we evaluate websites and software?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:08:02 PMTrue Cliff--in a well balanced world, there are some technology plans that include purchases, you job is to double check that it is sufficient
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:08:36 PMIn some cases, you may find that the technology infrastructure is more than sufficient
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:09:45 PMYes Marica, you're right. But when you're actually doing the evlauation, you'll probably physically walk around and check out the technology. Some of it may be unused, disabled or in bioxes
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:10:07 PMAre you ready to dive in with the hardware audit?
Bruce Long11/20/20019:10:17 PMSo in the plan we should have an inventory checklist of the thinks that are needed to accomplish the goals, right?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:10:38 PMThe eadings and sample designs wil be very clear in helping you identify the areas of technology need
doug greenway11/20/20019:11:13 PMMark, Is there a particular form you would like us to use for the audit?
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:11:16 PMMark, will we cover the software and web audits next week?
Paulette Mangold11/20/20019:11:31 PMGood question Doug
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:11:34 PMYou can append the checklist. In you plan, you will have a specific question dealing with the technology infrastructure, some thing lie . . .
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:12:17 PMIs there sufficient technology to meet the learning goals of the chool/district/organization.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:12:40 PMDoes that question go in the with the other guiding questions or is it just a part of the hardware audit?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:12:40 PMNo Doug, one page should about do it for you. Now . . .
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:13:17 PMThere are a couple of teams with the technology availability questions already a part of the plan. Kudo's to you, I think OLC is oneof them. Not much work left for you to do then.
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:13:32 PMare we signing off
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:13:36 PMYes Bruce, in with the other guiding questions.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:13:37 PMNo Rose
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:13:45 PMWe jsut got started!!!
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:13:59 PMTechnology audit, making sense?
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:14:03 PMbells are ringing, just wondering
Paulette Mangold11/20/20019:14:09 PMYes
Bruce Long11/20/20019:14:10 PMYes. Can we talk about today's eamil assignement?
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:14:11 PMyes
cliff delong11/20/20019:14:23 PMgot it... Website and software evaluation???
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:14:32 PMIn a bit Bruce, about the software and web site evaluation.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:14:49 PMOK
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:14:52 PMwhat website?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:15:03 PMThe same interest we have in hardware also translates to the softeare acquisition process and web site use.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:15:45 PMNow, keep in mind that softwre and web site use might be more relevant to the k-12 environment than the higher education environemt. You determine the applicability. But . . .
Bruce Long11/20/20019:16:38 PMBut these are audits similar to the approach of the hardware audit, right?
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:16:39 PMSo Mark, the hardware, software and websit audit all have to be done Dec 6
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:16:40 PMThe acquistion of software is sometime such an enigmatic thing, the principal calls up the technology coordinator and says we have $600 left over from our technology budget, let's use it before we loos it
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:17:14 PMSo, the tech coord. buys some software that she thinks comes in cute packages.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:17:35 PMThat approach to software acquisition is greatly flawed. So, . . .
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:18:14 PMI want toyou take a look at the software acquisition process in your environemnt and see if there is a systematic, and teacher influenced approach taken.
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:18:28 PMso is this more of a survey?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:18:59 PMTher are some criteria for good software. Are those criteria applied? Who is involved in the software acquisition process int he school? So they represent approapriate stakeholders?
Heidi Noem11/20/20019:18:59 PMThat was my question too Lisa.
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:19:13 PMHow would we do that? Put in our plan to ask key people? Ask if it actually happens as spelled out in the tech plan for the school/district?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:19:24 PMThat's what's important here. You're looking at the process of software acquisition, not the quality of the software itself.
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20019:19:24 PMSo Mark do we do this with the district we are working with as a team? Do I rely on Brian to tell us what's happening in Shannon Cty?
cliff delong11/20/20019:20:08 PMCriteria 1 - Not produced by Microsoft!
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:20:13 PMNot a survey. But investigative. So Brican mght be one source, but hopefully not the only source.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:20:23 PM;-) cliff
Bruce Long11/20/20019:20:45 PMSo we are actually executing this part of the evaluation paln?
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20019:20:47 PMDefinitely look at documents from the district and the tech plan for their acquistion plans.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:21:10 PMI would begin by seeing if there is a formal process for software acqusition that exists in the school, if there is, is it followed? Does it apply useful criteria, and does it invole all the right people?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:21:23 PMOr, is it haphazard and done by chance?
Brian O'Connor11/20/20019:21:24 PMYes marcia. Listen to Brian. He is very smart.
cliff delong11/20/20019:21:26 PMHow do we acquire, not what or what quality the software acquisition may be?
Marcia Torgrude11/20/20019:21:52 PMMark said only partly listen to you Brian.:-)
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:21:54 PMNo Bruce. You are planning a review of the process, that is a part of your evaluation.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:22:10 PMOK, I see now.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:22:57 PMSo we are sorting out what questions need to be asked?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:22:59 PMRight Cliff, that review involves not only software content programs, (blaster, reader ready rabit, etc.) but productivity software as well.
Cindy Rall11/20/20019:23:34 PMSo if that plan exists in our tech plan and it is followed we steal it and put it into our eval plan?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:23:38 PMIf one person is making all these desicions about what apps to use and what programs to buy for the 4th graders to reinforce math. Something is drastically rong and needs to be remedied!
Rose Andersen11/20/20019:24:31 PMno truer words were spoken Mark
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:24:42 PMSo it exists in your tech plan Cindy. Then next think to do is see if it is followed. So, include in your plan an audit of that process. Is it a good plan? Is it followed? WHow can it be improved?
Cindy Rall11/20/20019:25:05 PMok thanks
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:26:25 PMThanks, Mark. That helps to think of it as an audit of the acquisition process.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:27:01 PMThe same goes for using and choosing web sites gang. IS there a protocol for selecting web sites for student use? What are the standards? Are the standards explicit? Do they comply with the acceptable use policies of the school? Or, are they haphazard and left to the discretion fo the teacher? In which case, a school could be held liable if some maverick teacher though the Natzi credo was a quality document for teaching inalienable rights
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:27:03 PMAre the software and web audits due Dec. 6 also?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:27:17 PMAll of it together, yes Lisa.
Bruce Long11/20/20019:27:55 PMSo we aren't auditing the school website, but the sites used by the school?
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:28:02 PMOops, I meant are the software and web audits due in the next few days with the hardware audits?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:28:06 PMNow remember, your not inventing a software evaluation plan--you're evaluating the software evaluation plan. Soes it exist? IS it a good one? How can it be imporved?
Lisa Tolliver11/20/20019:28:42 PMWhat if it doesn't exist? Do we make one that we would suggest be used with our plans?
Bruce Long11/20/20019:28:56 PMGood point Lisa...
cliff delong11/20/20019:29:01 PMK-12 Data Center (SC-148) 820 N. Washington Madison, SD 57042 It appears that whomever resides here makes the majority of software standards type decisions for sd.k12 - ie CITRIX
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:29:21 PMYou're auditin the web site selction process. When a teacher bookmarks a site and recommends it to students as a site for understanding civil war history, is there some protocol at the school that teacher uses to make sure that site is a quality resource.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:29:39 PMLots of schools are thinking about this, but they should.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:30:11 PMNow for OLC and the Mitchell evaluation plan to take a look at what the support staff does, this may not be entirely relevant, you decide.
cliff delong11/20/20019:30:49 PMhttp://cts.state.sd.us/documents/Content%20Filtering%20Report.doc State Mandate for acceptable websites for k12
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:30:59 PMBut for the rest of the plans immersed more completely in the K-12 wnvironment. These things are key considerations. So make them a part of your evaluation of the technology program at your schools.
Brian O'Connor11/20/20019:31:41 PMThanks Cliff.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:32:10 PMCool Cliff, thanks. The question then, soes the school adopt htat plan, and to what length. Is the plan a quality tool, or is it too cumbersome to apply. Make sense?
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:32:35 PMIf not relevant to our plan, Mark, then how does that affect the completeness of our eval plan?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:33:02 PMOkay, you're sitting there and saying Mark, Mark, when are we going to get this all done. And I say, it's not that demanding. Put the basics in your plan, that's sufficient.
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:33:16 PMWill not affect at all, if it doesn't belong Sandy.
Sandy Krage11/20/20019:33:25 PMok
cliff delong11/20/20019:33:30 PMCould we chat with Mike Waldner re website evaluation next week?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:33:34 PMOkay, sleep on that gang. We'll talk moe about it later. Okay?
Mark Hawkes11/20/20019:33:48 PMWhy do you want to chat with Mike?
Bruce Long11/20/20019:34:20 PMSo Mark, I am wondering about the assignment you sent out today. Do you want us to powt our entire reaction on the web board at once or can we interact over pieces of the article?
